The purpose of the job

The principle is responsible for the effective management of the Early Childhood Centre. They are responsible for creating the atmosphere and interpreting the methods of the Centre to the other workers. They will work in a team where they will give effective guidance towards education, training and administrative duties.

Summary of responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the general centre discipline.
  • Improves relations with parents and staff by having functions, parents’ days, visits and other gatherings.
  • Attends governing body and other relevant meetings and delivers a contribution.
  • Supervises premises, buildings and property.
  • Evaluates the staff continuously.
  • Arrange and conduct staff meetings.
  • Planning the Year Plan and curriculum for the year.
  • Performance Management and Assessment Reports of Staff.
  • Oversee the report writing and assessment of each child in the centre by the class teachers.

Administrative duties

Responsible for the overall administration of the Centre.

Finances

  • Compile the annual budget for the Centre with the help of the Senior Manager for Residential Care.
  • Monitors expenditure to remain within the allocated budget.
  • Receive Centre fees and write receipts.
  • Update and consolidate all money received at the end of the month.
  • Update invoices and fees statements and hand out to parents.
  • Ensure the Finance Department at Head Office receives updated information on all financial aspects of the Centre.
  • Responsible for Statistics, Claim forms, Quarterly Financial reports, Progress reports and Business Plans to the Department of Education in order to obtain subsidy.

Training and Guidance

  • Gives attention to the well-being of the staff.
  • Gives general guidance and advice to the teachers with regard to the educational program by means of an educational funded and practical feasible Centre Policy.
  • Visits classes on regular basis to check the teachers’ work.
  • Assess the teachers to improve their teachings skills and also to give effective training and guidance.
  • Give intensive guidance to inexperienced persons.
  • Ensures that the staff is up to date with the newest curriculum and thoughts for early childhood development with regard to approach, methodology, teaching aids, evaluation and techniques.
  • Ensures that the proper teaching aids are implemented in the classrooms.

Observation, evaluation and remedial teaching of learners

  • Gives continuous and close attention to the well-being and general progress of the learners in the Centre.
  • Observes and evaluates the learners to monitor their progress by doing class visits.
  • In collaboration with the class teacher, let parents know and refer child for further assessments when physical or mental shortcomings become clear.

Minimum requirements

  • Have a tertiary qualification in early childhood education.
  • Have at least three years’ experience as a Principal at an early childhood centre and five years as a pre-school teacher.
  • Have had professional exposure and/or experience in respect of all the performance areas indicated above.
  • Be computer-literate and able to work in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
  • Be able to speak and write English fluently.
  • Be able to function in a culturally diverse management team.
  • Be able to associate with and promote the objectives of Abraham Kriel Bambanani.
  • Have a valid Driver’s license.
